Environment and natural conditions in the strait:

• 400 m wide at its narrowest cross section

• The mean current velocity at this
  location  is 1.8 m/s

• The maximum depth is about 50m

• Considerable ship traffic

• Rich aquatic life with fish and sea mammals (seals, whales)

• Many species of diving sea birds,including some red-listed ones

The tidal power plant, with a maximum of 20 water mills, will be located about 80 m west of the existing bridge. A sailing depth of 17 m will allow unimpeded navigation. 

The maximum speed of the current, 2.5 m/s, is considered ideal for a pilot project. It is strong enough to generate significant power, yet weak enough to allow a gradual gaining of experience with installation and construction work without taking undue risks.

 Kvalsundet lies only a short distance from the city of Hammerfest and its airport and is easily accessible by car and boat.  Conveniently located along and across the strait there are both low and high tension power lines to which the tidal power plant can be connected.
